The recent announcement of Rep. Charlie Rangel, D-N.Y. that he will submit a bill in the next congressional session to make military service mandatory, should send shivers up your spine. Here are his own words: "I'm going to introduce legislation to have universal military service to let everyone have an opportunity to defend the Free World against the threats coming to us." For those who can no longer recall the history of the Viet Nam period, it would be simple to repeat the arguments that were used to discredit the nature of a military draft. While those condemnations were valid and remain so today, they often missed the most fundamental reason to oppose universal service to the State.

Articles of Confederation was Preferable

Once upon a time there was a country that believed in Liberty. The people of this fair land fought a revolution to free themselves from the tyranny of a foreign king. It was called the “shot heard round the world”. The purpose for all the sacrifices, risks and sufferings was the goal of establishing a nation, where free men could create a government that rested upon the consent of the people. How very long ago that was. So many people have forgotten - about themselves, their heritage and the very purpose, their government was intended to render.

Ministers, Priests and Clergy Mendacity

As a Christian Existentialist, who accepts the words of Jesus as divine, one might think that it would be befitting to worship in an assemblage with other believers. Christ in the Sermon on the Mount, taught the “Golden Rule”. Other religions and traditions spoke about proper behavior, but Jesus' "rule" requires you to do something favorably to others, while the others only prohibit you from doing something unfavorably to others! Jesus did not come to "destroy" the Law, but to fulfill it in every way. Now, if the Law has been fulfilled, it would seem judicious to understand the meaning of the “Temple Veil”. Jehovah allowed Solomon to build a temple.

With the firing of Paul O’Neill, you get another clear signal that the Bush crowd is no different from all the rest of the political hacks. The real issue in not about one man, the performance of markets or prospects for poll ratings in the next election. No, it is about the struggle over economic policy. The enhanced interests of Wall Street usually comes at the expense of main street. If people are confused about the reasons for the lack of free enterprise, within and among the corridors and comptrollers of capital, they will never understand the nature of the clash of cultures.

It’s a Matter of Trust

We live in an age of continuous government investigations. It has brought little comfort or meaningful reform. Each succeeding report issued by the newest panel of recognizable faces, seldom brings confidence that “We the People” are being told the truth. Complexity in details are explained away as mere random chance, while flaws in logic and conclusions are dismissed as irrelevant considerations. We then are told an official version to believe, what allowed accounts to accept and a recognized history to support the next investigation. All the time the issue of official TRUST remains unjustified.

America First is Populism in action

Most people associate the term America First with foreign policy. While the implication speaks loudly for a pro national stand, most ignore the tradition that Populism is at the core of the movement. In order to understand the heritage, one should examine the most overt aspects of this tradition. Professor Ralph Raico, states  the case for an American First foreign policy in his book - The Failure of America’s Foreign Wars. He refers to the following motto used by Richard Cobden, the libertarian theorist of international relations: 
“The great rule of conduct for us in regard to foreign nations is — in extending our commercial relations — to have with them as little political connection as possible.”

Elections bring out the worse in citizens

Words or phrases like democracy, self determination and the “will of the people” have a ring about them that appeal to the emotions of much of the electorate. How nice it would be to think that your one vote has meaning. When you cast your ballot, we are told, you are a responsible citizen. Well, is this a factual reality or is this nothing more than a fairy tale? Doesn’t the entire argument for legitimacy rest upon the claim that State authority is created through the consent of the voter? Forget about policy differences, for the moment. What matters is that government officials are bestowed authority because YOU give them that privilege. This concept is more than just a theory, it is the central maxim that underpins the entire legitimate rule of any government.

Wrong Solutions form the Left

While many Republican moderates and some conservatives support the Bush administration, most of them agree that those from the Left are plain dead wrong on their opposition. How nice it would be if it was that simple! The fools game of believing that political rhetoric is consistent with actual policy action is the one factor that can be countered upon to win every election. If Republicans really stood for limited government, we would support them at every turn. But we all know better or at least we should understand the real record doesn’t support the discourse. When it comes to those from the broadest definition of leftist orientation, what possible common similarities could philosophically conservative Americans have with the Liberal cause? Few is the most appropriate reply, but if you dig deeper you might uncover the true Achilles heel of the Left.

What Does Murder Really Mean?

The unadorned answer is that a murder results in the death of a human being. The most central of all principles is that life is valuable. If you agree and accept this axiom, it must follow that ALL life has worth and that EVERY person deserves the same respect. Our entire civilization has rested upon the wisdom and truth that is codified in the Ten Commandments. “Thou shalt not kill”  is stated clearly in the King James Bible. “Thou shalt not murder” is the pronouncement from Deuteronomy 5 in the Mechon Mamre Hebrew Bible in English.

The Color of Money

During another national campaign, we are exposed to issues and slogans that miss the mark. The question of impending war does not affect most citizens - they won't be doing the fighting. The issue of unchecked immigration does not concern most voters - they live in safe neighborhoods. And the loss of individual Liberties does not concern most people - they never understood the nature of their own rights.

Politics: Worse than making Sausage

You surely have heard that one should never watch sausage and legislation being made. Now we have something even worse to observe - Democratic Politics reaching a new low. Sen. Robert Torricelli is performing a minuet that would dazzle the Marque de Sade. Perversion has seldom reached such a stage which allows the bear exposure of raw political lechery, for the public to see. Contrived victimhood has reached a new level of smugness. The notion that the "Torch" is a dedicated public servant is so offensive to the most basic tenets of common sense that even the most casual observer of political affairs, perceives the difference between devoted love and incestuous rape.

The Senate and Imperial Rule

International affairs have always been an active area of involvement for the U.S. Senate. The public perception is that this deliberate body is the seat of wisdom for our elders. And who better than the dean of this august body, Robert C. Byrd, to depict the role of this assemblage. Back on September 15, 1998 as part of a lecture series, the Senator from West Virginia gave the address - The Great Forum of Constitutional Liberty. Byrd sets the tone with the quote: "To be ignorant of what happened before you were born," said Cicero, "is to remain always a child." The interject of Marcus Tullius Cicero, is most appropriate, since his story is certainly - The Life and Times of Rome's Greatest Politician.

The lesson on being a controversial politician

The recent primary results from Georgia has Congress Rep. Bob Barr and Cynthia McKinney looking for another job. It seems that voters are less concerned with dynamic advocacy, and prefer a low key style or a novice approach of an ex judge. John Linder and Denise Majette are hardly household names, but now they will get a ticket to ride the wave of non polemical representation. Just the latest sign of the times, or is it just another example of business as usual? At least John Linder has a voting record, RIGHT? But who can say that he won because of a stark theoretical difference from Barr?
